A Little European Football Fix…
February 4th, 2007 by Maria EvansThis week was so eventful I just couldn’t help myself. Plus, I have over 6 hours till the Super Bowl, so here we go….
First, Italian football (AKA “Serie A,” pronounced “Ah” because even soccer sounds sexy in Italian), has been “temporarily shut down” after outrageous rioting in Palermo, Sicily that left one policeman dead when an explosive detonated in his face while he sat in his car. The sports announcers called the chaotic scene a “Civil War reenactment,” and after watching the game on FSC, I’m practically speechless. Practically.
Here’s a video clip from Italian TV that shows flares and explosives going off every few seconds, fires burning in the stands, and the players ultimately getting hit by a waffling cloud of tear gas, which resulted in suspended play for about 3 minutes. (It was reminiscent of the 1988 “Fog Bowl” between the Bears and the Eagles but with less fog and more crying). Palermo went on to win 2-1.
Meanwhile, the American Invasion is continuing to provide excitement in England. Oguchi Onyewu is the latest American to cross the pond to play in the Premier League with his move to Newcastle, and his debut was against none other than Fulham and fellow “Yanks” Clint Dempsey, Carlos Bocanegra and Brian McBride. “The Gooch” almost scored, but was denied by Bocanegra. McBride put one in the net to take Fulham over Newcastle 2-1.
And David Beckham is a man that can’t be stopped, except by the bench in Real Madrid. He hasn’t played in over a month. But that hasn’t prevented Beckham from scoring, though, he was just named the sexiest sports star of all time according to a poll of 4,000 foreign women. Now while Becks is hot, he surely isn’t any hotter than Christian Ronaldo, who only ranked 16, and my favorite European sports hunk, Eddie Irvine, who came in at 20. (20? Please.) And, sadly, Wayne Rooney, famous for his red flag during England’s humiliating World Cup Semi Final loss to Portugal, was named the ugliest sports star of all time according to the same 4,000 foreign women.

To help bring Sussex Co together, I think we should all start pulling together behind our hometown football team, the Sussex Co Mustangs, of the Jr Diamond Football League. Their first game is tomorrow (Sat) at 1:00 in Norfolk, VA, against the defending champion Norfolk Chiefs. It’ll be a tough game, no doubt, but the team that’s together this year has the best shot to go all the way to Miami for the championship! Let’s support them everybody!! http://www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?cmenuid=1&url=sussexmustangs&sid=959441658
