Racist Watermelon Soda
June 14th, 2007 by Dan GaffneyI thought racist stereotypes in advertising art went out with Jim Crow. I bought this soda yesterday in Milford, Delaware at a Spanish/Caribbean market that caters to the local Hispanic population. This is 2007 right?

Product of Cawy Bottling Co., Inc.
Company established in Cuba 1948.
They have both white and black characters on cans. Guess it is a marketing thing. In the Caribbean this would not raise an eyebrow.

So no black person, real or fictional, can ever be used in any advertising for any product that contains watermelon or watermelon flavoring??
It’s people like you who perpetuate the stereotypes. Constantly making and then vocalizing the connection between watermelon and black people. Guess what! There ARE black people who like watermelon. Some of them like it enough to even want to advertise for it, but they can’t because if they did you’d be screaming from the rooftops that race relations have been set back 60 years! Get over it, everyone else has.
