Gaffney’s Top Five Sandwich List!
January 17th, 2008 by Dan GaffneyAfter much contemplation, here is my list of the top 5 sandwiches:
Â
5. Basic Grilled Cheese. (best with American or Cheddar on white bread, served with tomato soup)Â
4. Turkey and Swiss cheese with lettuce tomato and mayo. (Mayo and turkey are made for each other.)
3. BLT; Bacon Lettuce and Tomato. This sandwich is best served in a big “club’ style, cut into four triangles held together with toothpicks and turned sideways. My favorite childhood sandwich.
2. Filet-O-Fish. The McDonalds classic with the famous ½ piece of American cheese and special tarter sauce. I could eat these all day like candy!
1. Grilled Rueben. Rye bread with corned beef piled high with Swiss, and 1000 Island or Russian dressing, and sauerkraut… mmmm see you at Irish Eyes!

I’d agree except that Grilled Rueben (yuck), but I would replace it with achicken salad sandwich (with fresh white chicken breast, lettuce, tomato, and onion on toasted wheat bread with a side of cheddar baked potato soup). MMM mmm good.

1. Grilled Ruben from Corkey and Lenny’s in Cleveland.
2. Cuban Sandwich from Miami, not Tampa.
3. Muffuletta from New Orleans Progress Grocery.
4. Hellens Sausage sandwich.
5. Tomato with cracked pepper and Dukes Mayo on Seeded Rye.
Unfortunately, I eat more of the no. 4 & 5 then the others.

A tempting post!
1) Cinammon raisin bagel, cream cheese, smoked salmon, red onion, capers. (Breakfast or anytime)
2) Sourdough, butter (Smart Balance), living lettuce, cheddar cheese, pickled beetroot. (But #1 all summer)
3) Grilled portabello mushroom (garlic/parsley seasoning), red onion slice with mayo (S/Balance)
4) Filet-o-Fish from Mickey D’s :-O
5) Grilled white cheese and onion, sprinkled with garlic salt…and, of course, tomato soup (by the fire!)
#2 is flexible…sometimes leave off the cheese and beets, add tomato.

I’ve been digging wraps lately. I got hooked on them because this one restaurant at the Cleveland Clinic - The Garden Cafe - specialized in them, and I had one while my wife was having her hip re-replaced this past spring. Anyhoo, they have this one they call the Diablo Chicken, with a hot sauce on it, chicken breast, lettuce and tomato on a jalapeno wrap. Mmm…
I started making my own at home. Roast beef (medium-rare), lettuce, and tomato with horseradish and fresh ground pepper. You can use a regular burrito wrap or try it on a spinach garlic one.
As far as getting a hoagie, sub, or grinder (depending on where you’re from), we have this place called Sheetz - it’s kinda like a Wawa out there, but the sandwiches are better - and in some cases, really cheap. A 6″ turkey sub sans cheese with your favorite toppings is $1.99 every day. And Sheetx makes a mean BLT sub, Dan.

#1 Grilled Rueben on Marble Rye(Had the best I’ve ever experienced a week ago at a little cafe in Bonita Beach,FL.)
#2 Cassapulla Italian Sub
#3 Liverwurst on a good Jeweish rye with onion and deli style mustard
#4 Turkey Club extra mayo(Dan is right, mayo was made to be on turkey)
#5 Wendy’s spicy chicken with lettuce,tomato,and mayo
Sorry Nancy ..my list isn’t very organic and it shows up around my waist line.
Happy New Year everyone.Curious as usual.

LOLOL…Weekend! Hey, these just happen to be my favourites…you should see the longer list. Here’s one for you…condensed milk slathered between two slices of white bread. Howzat? (I’m noticing no-one yet has listed PBJ.
)

Sooooo….that seems a little soggy to me! PBJ,was going to list it but then I thought everyone loves a good PBJ.But… the question begs to be asked, what type of peanutbutter and what type of jelly.
Welch’s Grape and Jif peanutbutter for me.Curious as usual.

Dan, I’m impressed- a little more manly than I would expect from you- Where is the Tofu w/ bean sprouts and dijonaise on whole wheat?
January 18th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Nah, no jelly Weekend. Came late to the party since I didn’t grow up with PBJ’s…not a clue until I was making it for my daughter! Now it’s PB (Smart Balanc…what else…lol) on a CR bagel, no jelly thanks.

What ever happened to that Grilled Cheese eating contest between Dan and Jared, or did I imagine that …

They’ve been trying to schedule a re-match, but James Dentino keeps eating all the food before it begins.

Spam, beetroot and onion. Unusual, perhaps, but an excellent sandwich. Of course, no sandwich is complete without a cold beer. O’Douls non-alcohol for me.
Turkey with mayo? Nobody eats that disgusting stuff! Okay, just the mayo, then.
