Formula One Kicks Off At Midnight

A 1:43rd scale depiction of one of the most memorable moments in Formula One history.

I waited 4 years, seriously, 4 years, for this race car to get shipped. It showed up last week. I actually forgot that I ordered it all of those years ago….

But it was worth the wait because it’s Formula One legend Ayrton Senna, after his car pooped out on the last lap of the 1991 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, catching a ride with rival Nigel Mansell back to the pits. Mansell was in the midst of his victory lap. You can check out the video of this great moment in sporting history HERE. (I like the part where Senna pushes away a circuit official who tries to get him off Mansell’s car).

Formula One starts tonight at midnight from Melbourne, Australia. Lewis Hamilton has the pole.

UPDATE: Lewis Hamilton went on to win, only 7 out of 22 cars finished.

Any idea what happened to the first race being scheduled for Singapore, Maria? I’m a bit out of touch with Formula One…lolol…remember being really interested as a kid around the time of Fittipaldi, Fangio, up through Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart…haven’t followed it lately (that would be quite a few years!)

Only thing more boring than F-1 is that silly game called soccer.

Singapore is the end of September, Nancy, and are you talking about Emerson Fittipaldi…I’m more of a Christian Fittipaldi kind of gal, but I did meet Jackie Stewart in Montreal once and he was surprisingly short, skinny, and leathery.

And Pete, your post was inspiring…what IS David Beckham up to?

I’m wondering if they changed the schedule…had read the first race of the 2008 season was to be Singapore, Maria. Yep, LOL…my age is showing! Emerson Fittipaldi, Juan Fangio…it’s the fathers, uncles, etc. with whom I’m familiar (but…I was still something of a kid…hahaha). Never met Stewart but was in line with him at some airport a few years ago…before he was made a Sir, I think. He is short, skinny, leathery and, frankly, was rather obnoxious. Think he let his ego run away with him.

Pete, you know that’s not true…nothing more boring than folks who don’t “get” soccer OR Formula One. :) Oh, wait! Yes there is…NASCAR and NFL! Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Formula One isn’t really boring, it’s just different…..especially when compared to NASCAR. As in the real world, F1 drivers have to turn left and right, run uphill and downhill, including tricky off-camber curves, use the brakes (heavily), and keep driving even if it rains. A F1 car makes a Sprint Cup car look like it’s standing still…..the accelleration is more in line with a superbike. While I do enjoy NASCAR, there is no doubt where the better drivers are…..F1.

Bernie Ecelstone (sic) still runs F1, and he’s following the money….thus, F1 is moving east, and dropping races in GB, Germany and so on. As for another USGP…don’t hold your breath. Ecelstone says no more F1 at Indy…..I used to love going to Watkins Glen, but I guess a return isn’t in the cards. Of course NASCAR still runs there, but those large cars look ridiculous lumbering around the track at 2-litre sports-car speeds.

I imagine he is lettering his spot on the bench. Trollop Spice is polishing his knee and ankle braces.
