Life For Lauren
April 17th, 2008 by Joe CiccantiLauren Marie Richardson is a 23 year old woman who suffered an anoxic brain injury after an accident on August 28th, 2006. Lauren’s life is endangered by a recent court decision that could allow the removal of a feeding tube and end her life.  This is very similar to the Terry Schiavo case. To learn more about the story of Lauren Richardson, go to http://www.lifeforlauren.org/. The facts of the case can be read at this link: http://lifeforlauren.org/aboutlauren.html. The interview with Christine O’Donnell on the story can be heard here. Because the court process is underway, the story has not been in the media as much lately, but Lauren’s father, Randy Richardson of Delaware has reached out to Christine to help spread the word. And although Christine was not able to go into every detail because of the ongoing court hearings, she is very passionate about this case. Also as mentioned in WGMD News, Christine O’Donnell is seeking the Republican nomination for the 2008 U.S. Senate race. Because of the results from the 2006 election, the support she received in Sussex County, and all the support she has gotten from Party leaders, Christine thought it would be a good idea to seek the nomination. WGMD spoke with her about the issues she is focused on in 2008, such as the economy, taxes, and the war in Iraq. You can hear the full audio of that interview here. While I have not been able to confirm this, I heard that Christine has gotten the endorsement of Gov. DuPont. The official report is expected out sometime within the next week. Meanwhile, Christine says that according to the tally of votes, “It looks like I will definitely be securing the nomination on May 3rd, and then I am very excited about hitting the ground running on May 4th.”

This is a very tough, extremely painful situation. I feel for Lauren, her child, her parents and, as is asked here, whom is ‘more right’ and who among us ever wants to have to make the decision. But for God’s sake, don’t leave it up to the courts.

I am sure O’Donnell is looking forward to serving her constituents in 2009……in her new job at Fox News.

Here’s obvious answer that nobody likes: Randy Richardson’s Lauren father is afraid to let go. The motto that holds true: Children shouldn’t outlived their parents. How can Christine O’Donnell help out in this? If Randy is willing go for it then good for him. If prognosis graved then try keeping Lauren will tear the whole Richardson family apart.

I would differ, Roy…even not knowing the man or the family I’d wager he isn’t afraid to let go. He doesn’t want to, cannot envisage doing so and for obvious reasons. Hope…and, perhaps his religious or spiritual beliefs. We all can eventually give up hope when a cause seems hope-less but when it comes to one’s children? I’ve never met anyone yet, who could do so. And who’s to say it’s hopeless or pointless. No, parents should not outlive their children…for me it seems an obscenity…but it happens. And when there is anything…anything…that creates even just a glimmer of hope we hang on to it. As I read it previously, it would seem that Lauren’s family is ‘apart’ and this may, sadly, have exacerbated the situation. It would be a good thing to concentrate on the positive…the family coming more together because of Lauren’s circumstance…than to be rendered further apart by differences in how to proceed

I agree this is a very difficult decision to make and as a parent I would not want to be in their shoes. My only question is has any one ask Lauren if she wishes to have the tube removed.!!!!!! If she is able to respond to voices, blink, and make verbal sounds she should be able to answer that question by her sounds or by blinking. I highly suggest that it be video taped and possably done in front of a judge!! or better yet have the judge ask her. I know this sounds silly but I have seen many things in my time as a health care worker. GOD WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
