Podcasting.

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

I’ve been getting a lot of requests lately for past shows I’ve done or to post certain audio or for CDs of shows and segments. Well, we don’t really provide CDs but, most of the segments are taped and available online. Lately, we’ve been going through some web admin changes and the posting of audio on our pod casts have not been available for quite some time. I’m just writing a quick post to mention that the feed of my show is back up and running. You can get the audio in one of three places. We keep about a 7 show archive on the Web site and it stretches a little further back on the xml feed.

First, you can manually download the files on our audio to go page.

You can subscribe to the xml feed on your rss reader or feed reader.

Or you can subscribe via iTunes by clicking advanced on your iTunes menu bar, click on “Subscrie to podcast” and copy and paste this url http://www.jared-morris.com/radio.xml

iTunes is a little glitchy with podcasts sometimes, but, if you use the above procedure, it should always be up to date. Although sometimes it will take a few days to get the show online and some shows because of techinal difficulties will not be able to be uploaded at times.

As you’ve notices, I’ve also been dealing with videos a lot lately. In the current feed, I’ve posted an older video from the program in mp4 format. That’s the iPod ready format. It’s really one of the only video formats that you can use with your iPod and iTunes. If you don’t have iTunes, windows media player and/or Quicktime will allow you to open the video. I’ll be working with video more in the future, but, for now, consider this a test.

So, the Podcast is up to date and will continue to be for a while. We are still going through some changes on the Web side, so some of the other podcasts will resume when certain changes are made. I will keep you all updated on the blog when those pod casts are available. For individual shows, audio requests and information, please ask the host of that show if you have questions about the audio.

Podcasting

Is there anyone out there that knows of any good Pod casts? I thought I’d start a blog post and ask people to either respond below or e-mail me at jared@wgmd.com if you know of any. I’ve been finding myself listening to more Podcasts lately, but, mostly because I’ve been obsessed with the TV show LOST latley… ABC does a great podcast of lost featuring the show’s creators available here http://abc.go.com/primetime/lost/podcastRSS?feedPublishKey=3421 — I also like the Ryan and Jen LOST podcast: http://feeds.feedburner.com/elostcast — Are you guys at all into Podcasting? I’m thinking of doing a PODCAST about a single topic like that, like the LOST podcast and trying to get a few friends into PODCASTING… So if you have any favorite Podcasts that you’d like to share with us, let me know below or through e-mail.. I’ll tell you what I’m kind of looking for… Nothing radio related… If I wanted to listed to radio podcasts, I could find them on my own.. No screwball podcasts… Not just people messing around… I’m looking for something informative, interesting and something that’ll keep me tuning in on my iPod… I wonder why there are no really good Delaware related Podcasts apart from broadcast based podcasting.. Well, that’s it for now.

Proposed Gas Station In Ocean View Fueling Debate

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Here is a recap of Tuesday’s hearing:

Arguments in favor of a gas station:

1. It would be a great enhancement to the community.

2. It would generate business which would help the community.

3. It would be convenient to have a gas station within walking distance.

4. Traffic is there to stay with or without a gas station.

5. No one will be coming into the community to buy cheap gas, because there is no cheap gas!

6. Nobody is going to come to Ocean View from 15 minutes away to buy gas and thus increasing traffic congestion.

7. It has not been proven with other gas stations that there is a traffic increase.

Arguments in opposition to the proposed gas station:

1. There are three other gas stations in the area within two miles.

2. There would be an increase in traffic.

3. There would be an increase in noise.

4. There is a health and safety risk to the public–from gas fires, gas spills, etc…

5. It would generate very little revenue for the town.

6.  There would be environmental risks.

7. A gas station in that location does not meet ordinance standards and is in an inappopriate location.

Those who are neutral on the issue say:

Take it to a referendum and let the people decide.

Just about every town has at least one gas station. So to me it isn’t a big deal. I agree that with or without a gas station, traffic is going to be heavy through that area, and it would be convenient to have one there. Perhaps they could put this gas station in a different location–maybe closer to the Food Lion on Route 26?

Visit Ocean City, Before It Disappears.

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Ocean City, MD Mayor Rick Meehan has the following alert regarding the evaporation of the ocean due to environmental causes and urges citizens to visit Ocean City before it is too late!; from youtube.com: A RECENT STUDY PUBLISHED in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society predicts the planet’s oceans will evaporate in just one billion years. This is not the result of global warming, but rather, the natural effect of our planet being pulled toward an increasingly large sun.

Check out the video of Meehan’s PSA here.

Update: On a side note… this video kind of reminds me of a Dharma Orientation Video… View Here…

Manufactured Housing Cont…

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Here’s an e-mail relating to today’s guest by Joseph Fulgham, Communications Officer, DE House of Representatives

Jared,

I was listening to your show today between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. As
someone who works for parties on both sides of the manufactured housing
issues, I need to point out that statements made by Delaware
Manufactured Home Owners Association (DEMHOA) PIO Fred Neil and blogger
Dana Garrett were inaccurate and do not further the debate on these
topics.

* On March 7th, negotiators with DEMHOA did agree to a compromise
on SB 122 (the bill to give manufactured housing community residents a
chance to collectively purchase the communities in which they live).
(See NJ article pasted at bottom of page.) This agreement included a
provision that dealt with the potential auction of these properties.
Specifically, the consensus on the auction provision was reached when
community owners agreed to give homeowners a “right of last refusal” -
an opportunity to win the auction by topping the highest bid by 1%.

* In regard to SB 122, unlike the Senate, House Rules prevent
committee heads from ignoring bills in their committee. The bill was
the subject of two days of hearings by the House Subcommittee on
Manufactured Housing on Jan. 9 and 10. At that time, the subcommittee
members agreed to give negotiators a chance to reach a
mutually-acceptable compromise on the issue. While those talks have
apparently reached an impasse, and the bill remains in the subcommittee,
it needs to be noted that any member of the subcommittee can make a
motion to have the bill released. Supporters of SB 122 have not done
this, likely because they feel they do not have enough support within
the subcommittee to secure a successful vote. Supporters of SB 122 may
lament this reality, but it is the outcome of a democratic process.

* Also, those supporting SB 122 have a second option available to
them by petitioning the bill out of committee. In this case, a majority
(21) of the 41 House members would have to agree to have the bill
brought to a floor for a vote. Two attempts to do this (in January and
May) failed for a lack of support. (NOTE: The number of votes need to
petition the bill out of committee is the same number that would be
needed to pass it.)

* Mr. Garrett’s allegation that Rep. Hocker was “mysteriously”
replaced on the House Manufactured Housing Subcommittee implied
something inappropriate had taken place. In fact, it was just the
opposite. Rep. Hocker, who did acquire two small manufactured housing
communities after taking office, removed himself from the committee to
avoid any potential conflict of interest. He has repeatedly disclosed
this conflict publicly and has also avoided voting on manufactured
housing legislation on the House floor for the same reason. Ironically,
Rep. Hocker purchased the properties primarily to preserve the
affordable housing. He feared another buyer might close the
communities, forcing the residents out.

* Mr. Garrett’s allegations regarding Rep. Short being
disrespectful to constituents are without merit. Dan Short was
repeatedly elected Mayor of Seaford, is a past president of the Seaford
Fire Company and runs a successful local insurance business. He has a
well-deserved reputation for being accessible and cordial - traits that
have led to the achievements I just mentioned.

There is a great deal of misinformation on manufactured housing issues
that is being actively peddled in an apparent attempt to obscure the
facts. I can only speculate as to the motivation of those responsible
for this but it is clear that it has little to do with helping the
residents of manufactured housing communities improve their situation.

Thanks,
Joseph Fulgham
Communications Officer
DE House of Representatives

Anita needs your help

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

I don’t think there’s really anyone today whose life hasn’t been affected by cancer – whether it’s a family member, friend, acquaintance or you. For some the battle is long – others very short. Some battle it with a vengeance, others not at all.

My introduction to cancer was in junior high. Jeff lived in the neighborhood we had just moved to and he had Leukemia and had been told he wouldn’t live to see 10 – he was a fighter. When I met Jeff – he was 12.

While cancer has also a part of my family, it’s a friend and former co-worker who’s now doing the fighting. Many in the WGMD’s extended family know her either as a friend, co-worker or their former account executive. She’s moved from the area now – but she needs your help.

In the nearly 10 years since I first met Anita I’ve known her to be a kind and caring friend and a determined co-worker. That determination saw her through her first battle with cancer where she beat it into remission. She’s back on the track again – literally running for her life – and others.

California, Here I Come!

The bad news last year was that my lymphoma relapsed, and it took nine rounds of chemo over seven months to get it under control again. There were side effects, and it wasn’t much fun.

But the good news now is that I’m getting stronger every day. To celebrate my recovery, I’ve started training with Team in Training to run the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco. And, as before, I’m raising funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help find cures- and better treatments- for these diseases.

Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS’s mission- I know firsthand how important it is. My goal is to reach $5,000 by July 15; I’m counting on your generosity to help me get there!

I’ll keep you updated on my progress. Thanks for your support!

Anita Lawson

Yeah – I know the economy not in great shape and everyone’s cutting back – but I’m asking for your help to get Anita to her goal.

Remember – eight cancer clusters have been found in Delaware, a state with an unusually high rate of cancer. Helping Anita could just help you, a family member or a friend to find a cure. Click on the banner below – that will take you to Anita’s Team in Training site where you can find out more.

Newspaper Spending

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

We noticed how many Delaware Division of Public Health ads were in the Spanish newspaper: “El Tiempo Hispano.” We were wondering why it seemed that they were investing so much into this one newspaper and how much is spent each year on El Tiempo considering all the other newspapers, which they appeared to overlook. This didn’t seem right, and to place ads in El Tiempo is expensive from what I heard. So I checked, and Spokesman for the Delaware Division of Public Health, Jay Lynch told me this: “This is right up my alley. I’m sorry to say that someone is feeding you bad intel about El Tiempo. Here’s a brief synopsis on DPH ‘health marketing’ newspaper spending.”

What I am in the process of trying to find out is how much they spent over a two-year period in 2006 and 2007 on about 4 publications per month, with about 3 to 4 ads per publication. The above information is per publication. I asked what the amount was per year. I think now they have gone to two publications per month. Here is something else I will be following up on–How much a year do they invest in radio ads? Also from what I understand, “El Tiempo” and “Hola Delaware” are the same thing. And isn’t $21,000 a far cry from $1,950 spent per publication in the Delaware Wave? If the total per publication for El Tiempo was the same amount in 2006 and 2007, here is what it would come to: $87,520 per month or $1,050,240 per year! Contrast that to the figure for the Delaware wave, which is $93,600 a year. Furthermore, the Delaware Newspaper Network –if you divide it up, the total figure is less than El Tiempo’s. Notice too that the Delaware Coast Press and The Cape Gazette are not on that list. The News Journal is the only newspaper over El Tiempo in terms of how much they invest, but I think the News Journal puts out tens of thousands of newspapers, while El Tiempo puts out only a few thousand? And where are the radio ads?
