Illegal Immigration
July 26th, 2008 by Joe CiccantiRegarding the issue of illegal immigrants and driver’s licenses, WGMD received this statement from candidate for Governor and Democrat–Lieutenant Governor John Carney:
“Like most Delawareans, I’m frustrated by the Bush Administration’s failure to address illegal immigration at the federal level. We need to treat all people fairly and compassionately, but at the end of the day we are a nation of laws and I don’t believe issuing driver’s licenses to those who are here illegally is the right approach.”
In addition, State Treasurer Jack Markell (Democrat), who is also running for Governor stated, “I specifically don’t favor driver’s licenses for people who are here illegally, but we need to make sure we are doing the right thing at the federal level.”

Ok - whether or not the illegals are given a drivers license or not they WILL STILL drive!! They need to be held to the SAME standards as Americans, however, they should only recieve a social security card and license when they become a US citizen. I had to produce multiple forms of identification and proof of residency when I moved to DE 81/2 years ago and I’m an American citizen. The laws need to be harder and reinforced at the federal level and followed all the way through to the lowest level of government - NO exceptions!

Lee’s policy was deadly for Delaware and incredibly misinformed.
I heard Protack on WHYY say a few things- some E Verify program, more screening by local police and fines for employers if they hire illegals.
The Democrats say no license, big deal. How about a plan?
One guy has one and it ain’t Lee or Carney or Markell.

Currently, This country has ‘immigration laws’ on the books! Business and Law enforcement turn a blind eye until something tragic happens. Until a law is changed, it is imperative that businesses and law enforcement honor the laws and crack down on illegals. The RIGHT thing to do is this: “If a person enters this country illegally, they should be deported ASAP. If a business hires illegals for the cheap labor they should be fined and or SHUTDOWN!”
The current laws of this nation need to be ENFORCED until such laws are changed. Rewarding illegals-(criminals) with a driver license is a sad joke on all law abiding Americans. Yes, if they enter this country illegally; they are criminals and should be deported by LAW.

There are too many loopholes in our immigration laws and they are too lax. I’ve seen illegals grow up, go through our public school system, to college, and vote. It was all too easy. They know how to get around to get fake SSN numbers and use our tax dollars without a worry of being caught. I’ve seen them deported only to come back within the year and use the same SSN they used before. They get drivers license, get their vehicles registered, draw unemployment while working for money under the table, get food stamps, and so on. These guys running for Governor don’t want to deal with the situation. The skirt around the subject by giving a generic answer to the question leaving open the possibility to back track on their stance. They don’t put forth concrete plans to deal with it. They can most certainly deal with it at the state level. These guys are all jokes to our state.

Wonder why Protack was referring to himself in the third person there? “A New GOP Voice” indeed. Even though Mike once stated “I always use my full name on every blog or comment,” he just can’t help himself.
Protack still hasn’t explained, as noted in the News Journal back in June, whether his plan actually includes arbitrarily stopping people and running a make on them.

Think of it this way: if you showed up in Mexico, Canada, or any country other than the U.S. broke and homeless and you asked that government for a drivers license and public assistance you probably wouldn’t get too far. And then when they realised that you didn’t have proper entry documentation, they’d probably lock you up and eventually deport you. Hmmm, sounds like a sensible plan to control uninvited and illegal aliens. Wonder if the U.S. could impliment such a plan?

Lucky for us all that the “Americans” already here didn’t think of that when the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth Rock, eh? Nor did the later colonists who so desperately needed laborers (and/or slaves) to do the grunt work of building this nation. And poor Emma Lazarus who wrote the beautiful words every student must learn by heart (and many used to believe):
The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Things have changed since the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth Rock. There was a vast land to be inhabited and conquered. Since that time the population has grown, considerably. A government was also established who made laws to control new immigration. I see nothing wrong with that.
Nancy’s words imply that we shouldn’t have immigration laws but just let anyone in because the words of the “Mother of Exiles” might appear to imply that we should. However, ‘Lady Liberty’ came to us AFTER our government was formed. I admit that I don’t know when our first immigration laws were written but it did become necessary at some point. We can’t go back three-hundred and eighty-eight years, to 1620, to justify an uncontrolled influx of immigrants. The Pilgrims were not illegals, and today’s illegal immigrants cannot be compared to them.
I don’t know how many other national governments allow free-for-all immigration but the number is probably very low, if any at all, and I don’t see why America should change our laws to allow it. Driving licenses are a privilege and they can be revoked. What do you do, then, with the illegal immigrant who has a license but no insurance, and his license gets revoked? As it has been said, they will still drive. Illegals should not expect to be given the rights and privileges of those who are legal, nor should those things be given them.
