The Complaint File

April 20th, 2009 by Bill Colley

A fellow calling himself CommonSense is crying about an inability to publicly reply to WGMD blog posts.

First, let me recite an old argument.  I’m William R. Colley.  It’s on my birth certificate.  It’s also on my driver’s license and my mail.

CommonSense isn’t the name on that fellows mail, license or birth records.  Pseudonyms, as I’ve stated here before, are for cowards.

Number two.  The WGMD website is an extension of Resort Broadcasting.  It isn’t a public park.

Number three.  The renovation of the website and the changes it wrought are not of my control and are beyond my pay grade.  Approval of comments has never been my responsibility.  It wasn’t before the upgrade and it currently exceeds my brief.

Number four.  I’ve investigated and asked questions on behalf of CommonSense and others attempting comments.  If it were in my power to approve I would certainly open the floor.  At this juncture I’m unable to get technical clearance.

You can always create your own website and offer all manner of insights, however.  As I’ve stated in another recent post if a tree falls in the forest and there isn’t anyone there to hear it, does it make a sound?

I’ll take your defence, Bill, but have to agree with Commonsense in that something very odd has happened lately. A week or so ago JoeMama posted a comment that was accepted. I then posted one which was visible to me whilst awaiting moderation/acceptance. Next thing, BOTH were gone…the one already posted and mine in waiting (which I presume was only visible to me and your moderator). What it appears to be is not necessarily the content of a posting but whether the moderator wishes it to be there for all to read. You say you would open the floor…well, apparently somebody there isn’t willing for that to be done when a comment containing no foul language, no off-clour material, nothing untoward other than disagreement with the blog poster is wiped away. And I think (my apologies to commonsense if I presume too much) that might be the basis for his/her complaint.

As to creating one’s own website…done it and apparently there are enough interested. It’s just too bad interest has fallen off the WGMD blog site…for one thing, you seem to be the only one with a continuing interest in keeping it going, the only one consistently posting. Myself, regardless of the fact that you and I don’t agree but rarely, I appreciate your attention to “CPR” on what used to be, at the very least, an interesting venue for discussion.

I discover alternate way to get around this. I bought $99.00 HD camera from Happy Harry’s in Millsboro & posted 2 ranks on youtube. I don’t have shame in doing this. It saves me from blocked from moderation of WGMD. I can cut loose & get away with it - there!!

Nancy, I do agree with you on WGMD blog dropoff. Starting blog or youtube ranks is better way to get your point across. You can control it yourself. You can make it clean or downright nasty - nobody can’t do nothing about it. Bill Colley has interesting blogs, thoughts, & witty trivial. I post 2 youtube videos : Roy’s Ranks & Roy’s Ranks - Bonus Edition, as my way to handle this. I control the content & cutloose without censorship. I can speak my mind & not feel ashamed of it. Nancy here’s 2 thoughts of my own; 1) LET GIVES A HOLLA TO - CENSORSHIP!!! I believe certain WGMD personality(Any Hints!!!??) has extracurricular job - NOT IMPROVING ON MODERATION. 2) If this one-sided escapade continues, then WGMD would you please put your blog of its misery.

Roy, good luck on your youtube venue! (Looking forward to checking them out!). When I…ummm…’retired’ from my blog on WGMD I decided to set up my own blog (about a year ago) and, frankly, have a great blog hosting site (and he is local!). If you haven’t already, check out Blogdumps.net. They are good people. He does have a few rules…usually the ones one would expect re adult content etc. but that’s not something that bothers me. As you said, I have total control of my content and while I can set my own blog up for me to moderate comments, I haven’t done so. I guess the blog isn’t doing so badly with over 20,000 pages read and 6,000+ visitors in just over the year it’s been in existence. I like the freedom to write as I wish and allowing others to do so. The way I see it, if I don’t want to take responsibility for something I write I shouldn’t write it and if I don’t responses…whether pro or con, why am I blogging? It’s a place to give others a voice if they choose to use it. Getting back to WGMD…despite the fact that I rarely agree with programme content or the blogs, I have a peculiar loyalty to it so every once in a while post a comment but aside from being disenchanted by the blog, the news comments section is worse. I have posted there…as often as not the comments never appear and on the rare occasions one does, it takes days…days! And again I will give kudos to Bill for at least trying to keep something going. Were it not for his posts…agreeing or not…this blog would be a waste of space.
