John Brady’s leap to the ranks of the Democrats didn’t go unnoticed at the Naval Observatory.  This morning the Vice President telephoned John and welcomed him back to the fold.  It may be that John’s decision will be greatly rewarded with such support.  Like many of you I was disappointed.  As I’ve mentioned many times I’m a former Democrat who left during the Clinton years and then briefly came back to the party when Clinton left office.  Democrats were my dad’s party.  He was an old “labor Democrat” who bolted to vote for Reagan.  Twice.  I left the second time when it became apparent following September, 2001 that the party was working to undermine our fighting men and women.  I don’t like appeasers.  There may be a great many Democrats you can live next door to but I’ve a second and greater reason to keep my distance.  The blood of 50 million babies screams out for justice and Catholics like Biden and Pelosi are blazing trails straight to hell.  The same with the Mormon leading the Senate Majority and toss in a multi-trillion dollar spending plan and apparently Democrats suffer from mass delusion.

All said let’s get back to Mr. Brady.  It doesn’t come up much in polite society here but John is a gay American.  Well placed Republicans never mentioned it but speaking to me yesterday two did.  Apparently John was O.K. while a gay Republican but as a gay Democrat the playing field is altered.  A couple of things of note, what in blazes does that have to do with his ability to hold elective office and why should this suddenly end friendships?  You can’t live in Sussex County , Delaware and not have friends or do business with people who are gay.  Are there people suggesting we place these neighbors behind barbed wire?  If so, who’ll protect your liberty when it’s threatened?  John is my friend.  He has been a good public servant and he certainly is smart enough for any job he tackles.  John Brady is the smartest person I’ve met in Delaware and I’ve even met “Pete” DuPont.  As for the local GOP, politics was once a grass roots effort and I applaud some of the changes being made here, however.  Ultimately the party will follow the national lead and Mr. Steele is no conservative.  A very good friend of mine wanted to get involved with the local Republican Party.  She’s a woman and was told she could be of great help with bake sales.  Bake sales!  Gentlemen of the GOP, this is 2009 and not just in the rest of the United States but as well as in Sussex County . My friend is articulate and extremely photogenic so why is there this effort to assign her to an auxiliary? 

While all of these things have been taking place on my show and in my life a much more sinister subplot is bubbling in the background.  A fellow by the name of Jon Paul Benedict, or that’s his email name, has been sending me messages demanding I campaign for gay marriage.  I suggested he take it up with the man he voted for in last year’s Presidential election..  This only fried J.P. and he gave me grief about being a divorced American.  Yes, it’s true, and this fool Benedict has no clue as to why I’m divorced and my family is off limits.  I’ve mentioned it on-air because people have asked and to say I’m currently married would be a lie.  Then he emailed me to say he and some shadowy organization he belongs to were going to investigate my personal life.  A warning, I’m a big man and I’m the father of a lovely daughter.  Don’t cross me.  Not only would I die for her, pal, I would kill for her. 

I don’t spend much time talking about gay issues on the show.  Oh, I shared a Pat Buchanan column last week for discussion purposes but the issue is really rare on my program.  Also I’ve stated that government doesn’t belong in the marriage business.  Churches and temples can decide who gets married or whatever name you want.  This argument that same sex couples can’t get the same benefits is a wash.  No couples should get any changes in benefits with marriage.  A system of fair taxation counts all equally and not two as one or one and one half.  We’ve got too much government in our lives and if we continue asking Washington or Dover or Trenton to carry us across the puddles then we’ll be nothing more than children with curfews, bed checks and no liberty. 

This is why I don’t like “victim” politics.  Race victims or sexual preference victims or immigrant victims.  It’s destroying us and the intent of The Constitution.

If ever there was a quote from my past to carry me through difficult times it comes from Eugene Mastin. “You have to play with pain”, he would tell us. It was August and later autumn of 1977 and it was the one year I played football for the man. He drove us until we ached. He drove us until we cursed him. He drove us until we did things for him we wouldn’t even do for our fathers. We worked so hard on the field that my gut would churn and three days into practice we couldn’t walk on sore muscles. So instead he made us run. We lost just one game that year, defeated 14-7 on a long pass late in a game against our arch rivals. On the bus trip home there was nothing but silence. It followed his words before we left for home. He was so very proud we scrapped for everything we could get before the clock ran out. As I got off the bus when we got back to our school he looked at the expression on my face and gave me a hug.

There were parents believing he drove us beyond civilized behavior. They worried he was overly profane on the practice field and they worried about his volcanic temper. It only made us tighten the circle around him. Heck, he never did anything to me my parents hadn’t done. It’s probably why I flourished working for John Butler for six years from the late 1980s until he left for better pastures. He was a veteran of psychological operations in Vietnam and a Colonel at the local Air Guard Base used to see me and ask after “The General”. It was an appropriate nickname.

I had some tough times then and my dad told me to tough it out. John did the same. It taught me the value of a human being is his/her effort and production and not the paycheck.

Dad, Coach Mastin and John Butler were men of a much distant era. They watched suspiciously as the culture eroded around them. The definitions of hero and success were changing before I even tied my first shoulder pads. The new breed, the parents whining about a coach making men of us, took over the country. A feminized culture is fine for women, I suppose, but judging by the mistakes made by government and Wall Street it hasn’t been good for the men still making most of the decisions.

It’s gut check time. Dad, Mr. Mastin and John got me through every crisis in my life but I’m really worried now. I’ve been talking with merchants and builders and they tell me they’ve never seen anything quite like they’re seeing now. They’re spooked and their customers are running scared.

It annoys me that I can’t even think about things like marriage or settling into a nice home because some idiot in some boardroom believed the new definition of his manhood was ripping off clients, neighbors and relatives. And his clients and neighbors weren’t any better and from what I can see must still believe in The Tooth Fairy. Lordy, over the past decade I’ve lost two jobs, rebuilt a shattered left leg, lived in five places in 3 states and financed retirement for 2 lawyers fighting an ex-wife in court. I was at the gym today and some woman told me I was an inspiration for everyone else there. The fat middle aged guy can really move on the treadmill and stair stepper. He also biked to Washington last summer, for those of you forgetting, because he long ago learned you have to play with pain. You play through it. It’s persistent and constant and it doesn’t ease with age.

On Tuesday the nation’s first androgynous President took office. Or at least he appears that way for many of you believing he’s in touch with his feelings. Those are the people that voted for Mr. Obama. Let me tell you I’ve an entirely different impression forming. I don’t agree with the man on most issues relating to government’s role in my life and I abhor his views about infanticide, however. There are some old grainy films of The President playing basketball as a teenager and we’re all familiar with so many elements of his life story. This guy is as tough as nails. Those of us on the right underestimated him until he grabbed the big prize. He knows you have to play with pain. Are you ready for what’s ahead?

So the plumber isn’t named Joe? It’s his middle name. No surprise here. We aren’t allowed to speak middle names in this campaign. The name which can’t be spoken, familiar to people of faith, which means the candidate, will now be known as “I am that I am”. When you go and vote tell them “I am” has sent you.

I’ve been putting together some strings of ideas. A story on NPR told me the world financial system was now so complex we need to be part of international regulation of the markets. U.S. sovereignty will be surrendered to a new world financial order. Days before I read a report from a U.N. committee. It recommends that meat be rationed to 2 servings a week in order to provide equally for all people of this world. Considering much of the world eats very little meat the paper targets the industrialized world or primarily English and French speaking North America. You’ll need a U.N. card for grocery shopping.

The same report also urges prohibition of alcohol. Apparently brewing cold beer takes food from the mouths of children in Bangladesh. Since we can’t be trusted to do the “right thing” the world government will reshape our conscience. Don’t object or you’ll lose the ration card and be left with an empty rice bowl.

How convenient for the globalists the financial panic. For many years I’ve derided conspiracy theorists who spoke of a currency called the Amero, the North American Super Highway and Washington’s submission to the United Nations. Now I’m starting to take these claims seriously.

Which candidate most likely to assume the White House would take us in this direction? Mr. Obama and Mr. Biden are primary sponsors of the “global tax”. Nearly one trillion dollars would be funneled overseas in an effort to end poverty (Apparently no one before has ever thrown money this direction). We’ll also need a trillion or so for single payer health care. We’ll control costs by limiting what your doctor can earn. You may remember surgeons in the Soviet Union often were paid less than construction crews. Not to disparage blue collar workers but your doctor has years of student loans on the books.

Unless of course you make education “free” and control teacher pay. This should only cost the treasury a trillion or trillion and one half. With a national debt expected to reach 11 trillion dollars next year you’re probably worried the national credit card will be maxed pretty soon. Not to worry, the Chinese have agreed to continue financing the debt as long as we agree to worldwide control of financial markets and ultimately subject our government and the will of the people to control of a world body. It’s all so easy but for the United States Constitution. No need to worry, Obama will appoint Justices who’ll smooth the rough edges. He owes the Chinese, my friends, they’ve bankrolled his campaign.

Lastly, you’ve likely heard President Obama and his Congressional friends, riding a rising tide in both houses plan to put the Fairness Doctrine back in place. Effectively silencing talk radio hosts nationally and at the local level who may dare tell you “I am that I am” is a false God.

Joe Biden, champion of common folks, shops at Home Depot.  Guess the little guy who owns the local hardware store doesn’t get “Uncle Joe’s” business.  Mrs. Palin could’ve pounced on this one Thursday had she not been under strict instructions to follow her script.  How about Joe Danko?  I’m not sure I’m spelling the guy’s name the right way but in my notes it’s how it appears.  He’s the man “Uncle Joe” talks with at the gas station.  When Biden goes to fill up his 350 he talks with Joe Danko and asks how much it costs to fill up the Danko truck.  Danko doesn’t know because he has never been able to afford a fill-up.  Guess “Uncle Joe” could always recommend the train but it probably doesn’t pass near the Danko home or business.  Palin should have pounced at that point.  It was early in the debate and she could’ve replied Danko could afford gasoline if Biden would get on board with offshore drilling.

The candidates played for a tie.  Apparently the instructions were to be as cautious as possible in a still relatively close race.  McCain needed a knockout punch.  Palin had the opportunities.  It makes me wonder if Bobby Jindal would’ve followed instructions or vamped when the opportunity arrived.  If nothing changes from now until November Obama will be in The White House and Americans will be buffeted by the storm.  Then, again, McCain is proving he isn’t the tonic.  Most of this year’s GOP candidates didn’t have much more to offer. 

So where do we go from here?  Start storing the canned goods and dried beans but most importantly keep your powder dry.  I believe the positive is the military will side with Middle America.  It mirrors our values.  This isn’t the end.  Jefferson offered a blueprint.  “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants” he not only warned but also suggested.  Jefferson’s modern counterpart was an earlier Arizonan.  ” I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!” spoke Barry Goldwater.  McCain may be missing his mentor’s words but I haven’t. 

My parents weren’t the easiest people to live with when I was growing up.  It always appeared they were making things more difficult for us than need be.  At a young age I was handling firearms and fishing poles and no one ever offered a “time out” when I wasn’t a good boy.  The approach helped me survive some very lean years as a young broadcaster making 200 dollars a week while paying rent and a student loan. 

There are a great many people sending me tips about survival.  Yes, I agree debt loads should be reduced and I agree we need an ample supply of non-perishable foods but mostly survival requires wit and grit. 

I’m fully confident the nation will come out of the tumult with a restoration of traditional virtues as well as an original sense of liberty.  The folks who never heard the word no, experienced a paddling or who don’t have the brains to head for higher ground during a flood won’t have a clue.  God help them.

Ever since John Atkins resigned his 41st District seat in the state House, it’s been rumored that Atkins would run again in the future – possibly switching to the other side of the aisle and becoming a Democrat. 

That’s either been the worst kept secret or the best possible speculation – though he did run for to regain his former seat in the special election as an independent candidate.  He had plenty support from people, but when it came time to actually step into the voting booth – that support was flagging. 

With November drawing nearer, and a Republican still seated in the 41st District seat, Democrats in the district are looking for a candidate to run against Greg Hastings.  However, if Atkins is still looking to switch allegiances to the Democrats – he may find the reception rather icy.

Please be advised that the 41st District Democratic Committee held a special meeting on Wednesday evening, Feb. 13, at the Gumboro home of former State Representative and Mrs. Charles P. West. The meeting was held for the purpose of considering a resolution, submitted by Rep. and Mrs. West, both of whom are committee members, concerning the proposed Democratic candidacy for the office of 41st District Representative of former State Representative John C. Atkins, a long-term Republican who resigned his office last March rather than face an expulsion vote in the House of Representatives.

A quorum being present, the meeting was called to order by 41st District Committee Secretary Vanessa S. Deloach, who served as acting chair in the absence of the committee chair and vice-chair. Following a discussion of the matter, the resolution was duly approved. The resolution text follows:

RESOLUTION REGARDING THE POSSIBLE CANDIDACY OF FORMER STATE REPRESENTATIVE JOHN C. ATKINS FOR THE OFFICE OF 41ST DISTRICT STATE REPRESENTATIVE.

WHEREAS, former 41st District State Representative John Atkins was the subject of a news article in a recent issue of a local weekly newspaper, The Sussex Countian, entitled “Atkins to run again…as a Democrat?”; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Atkins, as noted in the article, resigned his seat in the House of Representatives in March, 2007, after a House Ethics Committee report found that he had brought that body “into disrepute” because of his behavior during and after an Ocean City, Maryland, traffic stop and a subsequent domestic disturbance in late October, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Atkins’s decision to resign from the House of Representatives was due, at least in part, to the clear knowledge that, had he not done so, many of his fellow Republicans and a substantial number of House Democrats, having been fully apprised of the details of his case, were prepared to vote to expel him from that body; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Atkins has now let it be known that he is seriously considering leaving the Republican Party and running in the 2008 general election as a Democratic candidate for the seat he formerly occupied; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Atkins was quoted in the newspaper article as saying “I’ve been asked by a lot of Republicans and Democrats to consider running”; and

WHEREAS, he was further quoted as saying that “Obviously Republican party officials have discouraged me from running…[but] I’ve been courted by some Democratic officials”;

NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the 41st District Democratic Committee that they do hereby state and aver, clearly and unequivocally, that the Committee does not encourage or support the candidacy of former Representative John Atkins, running as a Democrat, for the office of 41st District State Representative.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the members of the 41st District Democratic Committee that, while the United States of America remains a free country and as a citizen thereof, Mr. Atkins has every right to register as a member of any political party he so chooses, and to run for any office for which he meets the legal requirements, if he decides to run as a Democrat for the 41st District Representative seat, he will do so without the official endorsement of the 41st District Democratic Committee.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the 41st District Democratic Committee does not feel that it would be helpful to the cause of good government, to which we have always been committed, for any other outside “Democratic officials” to inject themselves into the internal affairs of the 41st District by urging Mr. Atkins to pursue a Democratic candidacy that the 41st District Democratic Committee declines to support.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, upon its adoption, suitable copies of this Resolution be made available to Mr. John Atkins, to the local and state news media and to other interested parties.

Patriot Day was created through a proclamation (Public Law 107-89) by President George Bush after the terror attacks on September 11, 2001. The day is in memory of the nearly 3000 who lost their lives at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, DC and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. President Bush has made the resolution and proclamation to designate September 11 as Patriot Day each year since 2002. The legislation requests that President designate September 11 as Patriot Day each year. The day is a discretionary day of remembrance – which means it is not an official public holiday.

How or when Patriot Day is observed depends on your location. US flags are to be flown at half-staff and flown from residences as well (that includes US buildings abroad as well). Now, here’s where location will make a difference. Americans are asked to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46am (EDT) to mark the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11, crashing into the World Trade Center in New York City. A moment of silence could also be held at 9:03am (EDT) when the second plane, United Airlines Flight 175, struck the second tower of the World Trade Center, at 9:43am (EDT) when American Airlines Flight 77 slammed into the Pentagon or at 10:10am (EDT) when United Airlines Flight 93 went down in a field near Shanksville, PA.

Initially the day was called the “National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks.” Then changed to Patriot Day by a by Joint Resolution 71 which was approved in the US House by a 407 – 0 vote (25 members didn’t vote) on October 25, 2001 and approved unanimously by the US Senate on November 30, 2001. President Bush signed the resolution into law on December 18, 2001.

People have had some trouble wrapping their thoughts around Patriot Day – with most referring to the day as 9-11 or September 11th instead. Another problem with the day is that it is often confused with Patriots’ Day (one has an ‘s’ and one doesn’t). Patriots’ Day is observed on the third Monday in April and is a civic holiday in Massachusetts and Maine. It is also a public school observance day in Wisconsin. Patriots’ Day has nothing to do with Patriot Day.

Canada shares the observance of Patriot Day as well with flags on the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill in Ottawa and all Canadian diplomatic missions in the US flying at half-staff.

We have speculation, wishful thinking, and supposition in the air when talking about Sussex County politics.  Here I am conjuring up all the secret and not so secret information using my magic “old time” microphone.

State Representative George Carey retires and Sussex County Councilman Lynn Rogers runs for his seat against the “heir to the throne” Dale Carey. Advantage: Rogers.

The seat vacated by Rogers makes Judson Bennett salivate for another shot at the County Council seat, but will he face a republican primary from Recorder of Deeds John Brady?  Maybe; it depends of what happens with Pete Schwartzkopf’s bid to be chosen by Jack Markell to run as Lieutenant Governor.  See, if Schwartzkopf runs for LG Brady will want the 14the district seat.  Advantage: Judson.  Disadvantage: Brady. Even: Pete Schwartzkopf.  (It looks like he’ll stay put as State Rep., the field is too thick for Lt. Gov) 

Brady wants Insurance Commissioner when Matt Denn runs for Lieutenant Governor and Clerk of the Peace George Parrish runs for State Treasure when Markell jumps to Governor.

State Senator George Bunting will step down after a great career and State Representative Gerald Hocker will jump to take his seat.  A lot of “wanna-be’s” will want to be State Rep replacing Gerald.  The rumor list includes mortgage broker Walt Lydic, the queen of the inland bays Shirley Price, and even an ex radio host.  (All Democrats we presume)
