A married couple on trial in Worcester County this week on charges that they staged a robbery inside a West Ocean City hat store last year have been sentenced to five years each, in prison.

Kevin Purnell and his wife Roslyn were found guilty Thursday for stealing $28,000 in merchandise from Lids in August 2012.

Kevin Purnell was a clerk at the store; he told police that a man attacked him, threatened him with a gun and stole the merchandise. But police say surveillance video showed a woman, not a man, binding his hands and feet; besides, police say Kevin Purnell had no physical injuries.

The couple was arrested in Baltimore two weeks after the incident; 800 hats were found in their van.
