IRS Increasing Program That Helps Police Investigate Identity Theft

Mar 29, 2013 -- 9:45am

The IRS is expanding its efforts to fight the growing problem of identity theft on tax returns.

The IRS is expanding its Law Enforcement Assistance Program to help police get data from tax returns that will help them investigate cases of ID theft. The IRS has received nearly 1,600 waiver requests since the program started in nine states. Starting today, the program will expand to cover all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The IRS has also expanded its Identity Protection PIN pilot program, which provides an extra layer of security for taxpayers who’ve been victims of identity theft in the past.

Since the start of this year, the IRS has worked to close more than 200,000 cases of identity theft.
