A Delaware State Trooper was involved in an accident with a pedestrian outside of Wilmington early this morning.
State Police say around 4:05 a.m., a trooper from Troop 6, the Prices Corner barracks, was driving west on Kirkwood Highway, just east of Farrand Drive. At the same time, 49-year-old Robert Smith of Wilmington was trying to cross the westbound lanes, and was hit by the trooper’s cruiser. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The trooper was wearing his seat belt, and wasn’t injured in the collision.
The accident closed westbound Kirkwood Highway for three and a half hours. The investigation is continuing, but State Police say alcohol appears to have been a factor on the part of Smith.
