Many house fires caused by clothes dryers can easily be prevented through regular cleaning and maintenance.
Dryers should never be run without the lint filter, and the filter should be cleaned before or after each time the dryer is used to allow proper airflow. The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office recommends removing obstructions from the housing of the outside vent. The area around the dryer should be clean, with no combustible items nearby.
The Fire Marshal’s Office says the dryer shouldn’t be left running if you leave your house. The Fire Marshal recommends hiring a qualified professional to service your dryer at least once a year to make sure it’s operating at its peak performance and efficiency. If in doubt, review the owner’s manual for the proper safety measures for your dryer.
