Maryland State Police say a former Ocean City police officer and candidate for Worcester County Sheriff has been charged with illegally selling an AK-47 assault rifle last month.

Police say 45-year-old David Catrino of West Ocean City was working at Sherwood Ford on Route 13 in Salisbury when he sold four 30-round, fully-loaded magazines for the rifle to an unidentified buyer.

Catrino was charged Wednesday with unlawful sale or transfer of a regulated firearm and four counts of assault weapons violations; he was released after posting $50,000 bail.

Catrino worked as an Ocean City police officer from 1994 to 2007.
