UPDATED: Route 1 In Middletown After Dump Truck Overturns; Driver Slightly Injured

Sep 18, 2013 -- 7:42am

UPDATED 10:07 AM: One person was slightly injured, and an overturned dump truck caused major headaches for drivers earlier this morning on Route 1 near Middletown.

Just after 5:15 this morning, Delaware State Police say 25-year-old Joshua Thompson was driving the dump truck north on Route 1. As he approached Pole Bridge Road, an SUV driven by 75-year-old Ted Schaum of Viola moved from the right shoulder directly into the path of the truck. Thompson swerved to the left to avoid the SUV, but that caused the dump truck to overturn, spilling its contents into the road. He was taken to Christiana Hospital to be treated for minor injuries from the crash.

Schaum was cited for failing to yield when entering a roadway, and failing to have insurance identification in his possession. The crash closed Route 1 northbound for about three and a half hours.

An overturned dump truck has closed a stretch of Route 1 in New Castle County.
