Over the weekend Beebe Medical Center put out a notice of a recall of prepared salads from Reser’s Fine Foods which may be contaminated with Listeria. Delaware Public Health officials say NO ILLNESSES have been tied to these products in Delaware or anywhere else in the US. However the recall has been expanded to include not only the Beebe main hospital campus cafes and the Gull House – but also several schools in the Brandywine School District and Cape Henlopen School District – specifically H-O Brittingham Elementary, Lewes School, Mariner Middle and Rehoboth Elementary Schools. Also included are Dover High School and Smyrna High School.
Beebe Medical Center is alerting the community about a recall of possibly contaminated prepared salads from Reser’s Fine Foods. The salads may be contaminated with Listeria – and may have been served in the main hospital campus cafes and the Gull House beginning in mid-August until this past Thursday. Listeria was reported to have been found in the Reser’s Fine Foods manufacturing facility in Topeka, Kansas on Tuesday.
The foods that were served that were recalled are marked with a Use-by-Date or Best By Date and followed by a plant identifier code of 20
Some people do not develop symptoms and would not need to be treated. However, illness can be serious. Persons who are most at risk of becoming ill include: the very young, the elderly, those with a weakened immune system, and pregnant women (to include risk to fetus or unborn infant). Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, stiff neck, confusion, headache, loss of balance, and seizures. Sometimes these symptoms are preceded by vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms most commonly occur 1 – 3 weeks after eating a product contaminated with Listeria but can even occur as early as 3 days to as long as 70 days after consumption.
If symptoms do occur, see a healthcare provider immediately. It is very important that you alert your physician that a recalled food product was eaten and exposure to Listeria may have occurred.
