Sen. Carper Calls For Coordinated Approach to Emergence of Virtual Currencies

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee has been looking into the implications of virtual currencies, and Chairman Tom Carper says a consistent, informed and coordinated approach must be taken to prepare for their emergence.

In his opening statement during Monday’s “Beyond Silk Road” hearing, Senator Carper described how the committee has been looking into the potential risks, threats and promises posed by virtual currencies such as Bitcoin. The committee has also heard from government departments and agencies about their approaches to virtual currencies as an emerging technology, and how they’re working together to develop a “whole of government” approach.
