Delaware warns small businesses to be aware of fraud

Identity theft is a big issue these days, however, officials say small businesses are just as at risk of fraud schemes. Delaware’s Division of Revenue is warning Delaware business owners to be aware of people stealing company information to open up fraudulent credit card accounts or file bogus tax returns to snap up refunds.

Officials say there was a sharp increase of fraudulent business filings this year, and thieves are displaying a sophisticated knowledge of the tax code. To combat such fraud moving forward, state and federal tax authorities are implementing additional security features such as confirming personal information about the corporate authorized signer, asking about tax history and deduction information.
