A man died after an accident at a local scrap yard yesterday. Around 1 PM Sussex County Emergency Operations Center received a 9-1-1 call reporting a man pinned under an automobile at Donovan’s Salvage Works in Georgetown. EMS crews responded to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
After investigating, Delaware State Police learned the victim was a 41-year old Salisbury man who was trying to get a part from one of the junked cars in the yard. He jacked up the vehicle, but the gravel and dirt was not solid footing, and the car slipped off and crushed the man. The first witnesses ran to the office and alerted staff, and workers then used a forklift to get the car off him before EMS arrived. The man was alone at the time of the accident, and police are unsure how low he may have been trapped. Delaware Division of Forensic Science responded to the scene and will conduct an autopsy, however, foul play is not suspected.
