There could be a pay raise coming for Maryland teachers; the Commission of Innovation and Excellence in Education has devised a preliminary recommendation that includes a boost in teacher salaries. The commission making the move in order to close the compensation gap between teachers and other professions. Supporters hope the increase in teacher pay would attract as well as retain more teachers. A survey by the Washington Post puts the average Maryland teacher’s salary at nearly 64,000 dollars a year. The commission will formally make their recommendations to the legislature by 2018 for the 2019 session.
