UPDATED on 4/30/2019 at 3:45 p.m.: Delaware State Police say the Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash involving a single vehicle that took place Monday morning.

The incident took place around 10:26 a.m. A 2009 Kia Spectra traveling westbound on Johnson Road east of Near Creek Road. For an unknown reason, the operator of the Kia failed to maintain the travel lane and drove off the north edge of the roadway and struck a large standing tree.

The operator of that vehicle has been identified as 76-year-old Margaret Hughes from Lincoln, who was properly restrained at the time of the crash. She was transported to Milford Bayhealth Campus Hospital by ambulance where she was pronounced dead. Her name was initially being withheld to allow for notification of next of kin.

The crash remains under investigation. Johnson Road was closed for around 1.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
