The search is on for a French sailor who never showed up to port this week. The 73-year old mariner Joseph Calland left Beaufort North Carolina aboard his 39-foot sailboat Nennette en route to New York City. But Calland never showed up, spurring US Coast Guard crews to canvass the mid-Atlantic region for signs of the man.
Watchstanders in Portsmouth VA received a distress call confirmed from Calland around 11:20 PM on Sunday night. Coast guard and Navy crews scoured the area it came from through Monday afternoon, but found no signs of Calland or a distressed vessel. So far, crews have searched over 2,000 square miles of seas in the mid-Atlantic and still no sign of Calland. Anyone with information about him or his sailboat are asked to contact the US Coast Guard.
