Wednesday saw small craft advisories hoisted for the bay and ocean keeping boats from going anywhere. I wish I had better news for Thursday, but the NOAA weather station promises to raise gale warnings.
Perhaps you have heard some news about the menhaden regulations passed by the Atlantic States Marine Fishery Commission. Most fishing groups and conservation organizations wanted ASMFC to pass a regulation that would have cut the number of menhaden taken by commercial fishing groups under the idea that menhaden were declining and this was having a severe impact on predator fish, birds and marine mammals.
Unfortunately for these folks, the scientific committee of the ASMFC said as far as menhaden were concerned, overfishing was not occurring and the stock was not overfished. So instead of cutting the quota ASMFC raised it a bit and promised to begin looking into setting benchmarks as to how many menhaden it takes to sustain the birds, whales and predator fish.
This is far from over, so stay tuned.
