General Assembly Passes Resolution to Observe Saturday as Armed Forces Day in Delaware


The Delaware General Assembly has unanimously passed House Concurrent Resolution 53 which recognizes Saturday, May 17 as Armed Forces Day in Delaware.

The day was created in August of 1949 by Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson and first observed on May 20, 1950. Armed Forces Day was declared a national holiday in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy to be celebrated on the third Saturday in May in an effort to unite citizens to honor our military heroes past and present for their patriotic service and support of the United States of America.

This day is set aside to honor the determination of our servicemen and women who intercept any threat to the peace of the United States with strength and resolve and know that the survival of freedom requires great cost, commitment, and personal sacrifice.
