Two Arrested; Charges Pending for Another Following High-Speed Pursuits and Reckless Driving of Stolen Vehicles in Kent and Sussex Counties

Two individuals have been arrested and another will face criminal charges following pursuits involving two stolen vehicles on Friday morning. According to State Police, on June 20th at about 5:00 in the morning, troopers spotted two Maryland-registered Hyundais—a Santa Fe and a Sonata—reported stolen that morning, traveling south on Bay Road near President Drive in Dover. When officers attempted traffic stops, each vehicle led high-speed pursuits through Kent and Sussex Counties. The Santa Fe, driven by 20-year-old Kyle Norman, abruptly braked—causing a trooper’s cruiser to rear-end it—before crashing into a wooded area near South Old State Road and Dupont Boulevard in Georgetown; Norman, passenger 20-year-old Hailey Warren, two 13-year-olds, and the trooper were hospitalized, and a screwdriver consistent with auto-theft tools was found under the driver’s seat. Simultaneously, stop sticks disabled the Sonata north of Milton; it was later recovered at the Shell We Bounce Trampoline Park in Lewes with its ignition pried open. 32-year-old Jonathan Bennett and two minors—including the 10-year-old identified as the Sonata’s driver—were apprehended nearby, and a screwdriver was seized from Bennett. Bennett and Warren now face multiple felony charges, and Norman will be charged once released from the hospital. The 10-year-old could not be criminally charged under Delaware law due to the nature of the offenses and his age. The children were turned over to their respective guardians.
