UPDATE: DSP Investigating Drowning in Broadkill River


UPDATE 7/17/25: Delaware State Police are investigating a drowning that occurred in the Broadkill River near Milton. At around 4:30 p.m., July 15th, troopers responded to help with a water rescue at the boat ramp located at the end of Oyster Rocks Road in Milton. Police say Yorch Niz-Chilel was crabbing with family near the Oyster Rocks Road boat ramp when he entered the river and walked in until the water reached his neck. He began yelling for help but went under before relatives could rescue him. Despite efforts from the Lewes Fire Department, mutual aid agencies, DNREC, and the U.S. Coast Guard, initial search efforts were unsuccessful and were paused due to safety concerns. The next day, the search resumed without success. That evening, a fisherman found a body near the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse in the Delaware Bay, which was confirmed to be Yorch Niz-Chilel. Yorch鈥檚 family has been notified, and his body was turned over to the Division of Forensic Science for further examination.

Milton Emergency personnel were called for a water rescue just before 4pm Tuesday. Reports that an 18 year old man was missing in the Broadkill River in the area of Oyster Rocks Road. Multiple marine and dive units were on the scene as well as DNREC Marine Police and the US Coast Guard.

As of 6:30 the missing man has not been located.聽 The search was suspended at 7pm.
