Sussex County Council Approves Recommendation for Payment Plan for Some Property Tax Bills

from County Finance Director Gina Jennings on legislation that was brought before the General Assembly during the special session last week. In all – seven bills were discussed, but most pertain to New Castle County, which has recently started its appeal process.
House Bill 241 does pertain to Sussex County. The Council approved a motion that authorized the Finance Director to enter into payment plans with owners of primary residential properties whose property tax bill increased more than $300. The payment plans would be divided into 3 equal payments with the final payment due by December 31st. Applications are on the reassessment page on the County website. The Council approved the motion with a unanimous vote.
Senate Bill 203 codifies the County’s authority to set multiple rates if the County Council chooses.
Senate Concurrent Resolution 122 calls for an immediate review of the statewide property reassessment by the members of the General Assembly in collaboration with state, local and school district officials. This was approved by the State Senate with a unanimous vote but requires further action by the members of the General Assembly.
