Renewed Focus on School Security as Classes Begin

In light of national headlines about school shootings and threats to campuses, many families may be nervous as the new school year gets underway. He adds that they want parents and the community to feel safe when they send their kids into their various schools.
It’s back to school season, and with that are concerns about school safety. Indian River School District Superintendent Dr. Jay Owens tells the Talk of Delmarva that they are excited this year to utilize the new open gate weapon detection system at both of the high schools in the district…

He adds that the district did use this weapon detection system at many of their athletic events, primarily at football games and some other internal events as well. He says they worked out well to ensure everyone’s safety.


He adds that in conjunction with their constables–they also partner with the Delaware State Police and some of the local municipality police departments to provide school resource officers–(sworn law enforcement officers) meant to complement the constable program.

He says their constables– who are constantly patrolling– help to test that system to make sure that the doors are locked and secure at all times.聽 The constables are also there to ensure safe transitions from outside to inside the building and vice versa.
