UPDATE: Forecasters, Local Officials Monitoring Potential Coastal Storm This Weekend

Coastal areas on Delmarva are bracing for what is expected to be a significant coastal storm with the threat of flooding and beach erosion this weekend and  especially Sunday into Monday. Lead Hurricane Specialist at AccuWeather—Alex DaSilva tells the Talk of Delmarva what we can expect in terms of gusty winds.

Localized flooding inland is also possible as well as potential power outages. The Talk of Delmarva will have more updates as the storm approaches and crosses the area.

One major concern is the slow movement of the storm…

DaSilva tells the Talk of Delmarva about the anticipated rainfall amounts through Monday, as the storm slowly moves off the Mid-Atlantic coast.

He say the largest impact from the storm by far will be the coastal flooding and the significant beach erosion.

Worcester County Department of Emergency Services (DES), in cooperation with the National Weather Service, is monitoring a significant coastal storm expected to impact the area beginning late Saturday afternoon. The greatest effects are anticipated late Saturday through early Monday.

The storm is forecast to bring heavy rain, strong winds with gusts of 55 mph or more, high surf, and coastal flooding exacerbated by king tides.

Due to the potential for flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas, residents in mobile homes or flood-prone locations are urged to make arrangements to stay with friends or relatives ahead of the storm.

To be storm ready, DES advises residents to take the following precautions:

  • Secure outdoor objects, like lawn furniture and trash cans, that can become dangerous projectiles in high winds;
  • Tie down boats;
  • Assemble an emergency kit with essential supplies, including prescriptions, protective equipment, clothing, food, water, and other family needs.

“It’s important for residents and visitors to prepare before a storm,” DES Director Chris Shaffer said. “Know your property’s flood risk, identify your evacuation route, and gather supplies that can support your family for several days if needed.”
