Construction on an upgrade and modernization of the Route 13 Truck Weigh and Inspection Station near Delmar is expected to begin this month. Maryland Highway officials say the weigh station will not be enlarged – all the improvements are designed to fit within the existing foot-print of the facility. Upgrades include new truck height detectors and an LED signal display and replacement of the current scale with a modern deep pit scale and computer system. Weather permitting the work is expected to be completed by next summer.

Additional information from MDOT:

Other facility improvements include:

  • additional parking for inspections,
  • upgraded traffic barriers, lighting, and closed-circuit cameras,
  • improved signage,
  • installation of eyewash stations for safety,
  • refurbished entrance gates and
  • replacement of existing office trailers with new modular buildings for inspections on both northbound and southbound sides.

Harkins Contracting Inc., of Salisbury, is the primary contractor performing the construction work. The US 13 Truck Weigh and Inspection Station is one of two remaining scale houses constructed in 1955. It has been operated by the Maryland State Police since 1967. The State Highway Administration works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits as well as other traffic pattern changes.
