MD State Highway Administration To Temporarily Close US 50 (Harry W. Kelley Memorial Bridge) In Worcester County

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin rehabilitation work on the US 50 (Ocean Gateway) Harry W Kelley Memorial Bridge over the Sinepuxent Bay in Ocean City on Monday January 5th.  Drivers can expect occasional daytime single-lane closures initially– beginning January 5th and continuing through January 20th. A total closure and detour will occur starting January 20th through February 3rd. Following the total closure and detour, single-lane closures will go back into effect until the project is completed which is anticipated by March 20th, weather permitting, according to MDOT. In addition, the channel under the bridge will be closed to marine traffic starting January 5th until the project’s completion. During the closure, crews will replace the nose lock assembly and retrofit the floor beam. These repairs require the bridge remain in the open position (draw spans in the upright position) for the repairs to be completed. Work being done is to extend the service life of the 84-year-old bridge.

Additional Information from MDOT:

Motorists will follow a signed detour that includes US 113 (Worcester Highway), MD 90 (Ocean City Expressway) and MD 528 (Coastal Highway) while the bridge is closed.

The State Highway Administration’s contractor, Covington Machine and Welding, of Annapolis, will use concrete barriers, barrels, and cones to direct motorists through the detour route. Arrow panels and variable message signs will be placed prior to the detour to alert motorists to the closures and changing traffic patterns.

The State Highway Administration appreciates customers’ patience during construction as we work to improve Maryland’s transportation system.  Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused and be aware of reduced speed limits and changing driving patterns. Slow Down and move over in work zones. It’s the law.
