Delaware Transit Corporation Secures Federal Grant for Major Fleet Rehabilitation

The Delaware Transit Corporation says a new federal grant will help improve bus reliability, reduce maintenance costs, and extend the life of dozens of vehicles in its fleet. The agency has been awarded $14.3 million through the Federal Transit Administration’s Bus and Bus Facilities Program to launch a midlife rehabilitation program for 51 buses, about 23% of DART’s fixed-route fleet. Officials say overhauling existing buses instead of buying new ones will help maintain a “state of good repair,” extend the lifespan of 40-foot buses from 12 to 18 years and coach buses from 15 to 20 years, and is expected to save about $7.4 million in future costs.
