Maryland House Considers Budget Amendments on Taxes, Fees, and Nonprofit Oversight
Maryland House Republicans proposed several amendments to the FY 2027 budget aimed at increasing affordability, including a 30-day gas tax holiday, halting a planned gas tax increase, and rolling back various fees. Democrats questioned the effectiveness of the proposals, while Republicans argued the amendments would provide meaningful savings to residents. Republican members also offered amendments to roll back the increases in vehicle registration fees, the increases in emissions fees, repealing the failed Tech Tax, and repealing fishing license and stamp fee increases for the elderly,聽but those were also rejected. However, both parties agreed on one amendment to increase transparency and accountability for nonprofits receiving state funding, which was adopted after bipartisan discussions.
