Grey Seal Pup Rescued in Kent County
A young grey seal is recovering after a late-night rescue along the St. Jones River near Dover. The call came in Monday, April 27th, after a local fisherman spotted the seal at the end of a narrow public dock while collecting minnows. A team from Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation (MERR), along with local and state police, responded to the scene. Officials say the seal’s location at the end of the dock required a quick but careful approach, and crews were able to guide the animal into a crate and remove it safely. The seal was taken to MERR’s facility, where responders observed labored breathing and unusual behavior. After an overnight observation and veterinary exam, it was determined the animal needed further care. The seal was scheduled to be transported today, April 29th, to the New York Marine Rescue Center on Long Island for additional treatment. Responders say while the seal appeared generally strong, there were enough concerns to warrant further evaluation. The rescue effort was credited to coordination between responders and local residents, including the original caller who remained on scene to monitor the animal until help arrived. The seal has been temporarily named “Franklin Gothic” and is expected to be renamed as it continues its recovery in New York.
