If you are driving in New Castle County – beginning Saturday, the Electronic Speed Safety Program will be active on northbound I-95 in the Churchmans Marsh work zone. This is a bridge rehabilitation project – expected to continue into mid-2027.
The first 21 days will be a warning period – no fines will be given, however beginning Saturday May 23, registered vehicle owners receiving a first offense will receive a base violation of $20 – and an additional amount added for each mile per hour over the posted work zone speed limit of 55-mph. Second and subsequent offenses incur higher fines.
The ESSP has previously been utilized on I-95 in the area of the SR 896 interchange work zone since July of 2024, and since that time, speeds have been reduced by an average of 10% in both directions, and over 400,000 speeding violations have been issued.
These violations are civil penalties and no points will be assessed to driver’s licenses.
