2 Injured in Pedestrian Crash in Dewey Beach; 1 Arrested for DUI & other Offenses


Dewey Beach Police are investigating a pedestrian crash just before 2 Sunday morning. Police say a Prius driven by a Florida man struck two pedestrians crossing Coastal Highway in a marked crosswalk near New Orleans Street.

Police say a 25 year old Lewes man was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries and released. A 22 year old Georgetown woman was flown to Christiana Medical Center with critical injuries. The 64 year driver remained on the scene and was cooperative.

Police say during the collision investigation a Ford that was southbound on Coastal Highway failed to obey fire police and nearly struck the officer and entered the collision scene. Police stopped the vehicle and removed the driver, identified as 26 year old Christian McPoyle of Dover, who showed signs of impairment.

McPoyle was placed under arrest and transported to the Dewey Beach Police Department, where officers obtained a search warrant for his blood. He was charged with the below-listed misdemeanor offenses:
  • Reckless Endangering 2nd Degree聽
  • Resisting Arrest聽
  • Driving a Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol聽
  • Reckless Driving
  • Driving While Suspended or Revoked聽
  • Related Traffic Offenses
McPoyle was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on an intoxication hold.聽聽
Delaware Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement (DATE) assisted with these investigations. The Dewey Beach Police Department is continuing its investigation into the collision. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
