UPDATED – 05/12/26 – The Sussex County Council met Tuesday and heard from County Administrator Todd Lawson with an update on the Opioid Commission Grant Applications. Lawson says the County received 25 applications from organizations looking for a share of $479,641 in funding – which the County has prioritized to be used for treatment and recovery. All the applications have been reviewed and ranked by county staff and Opioid Commission staff. Five organizations have been recommended and approved by the County Council to be forwarded on the the Commission.

Now the Commission will process the applications and provide a final approval. Then in June the County Council will vote on the final selections – then the Commission will allocate funds to the winning applicants.

The Council revisited two land use applications in Old Business. Change of Zone No. 2033 on behalf of Springpoint at Lewes, Inc., was amended and the amended application was approved with a unanimous vote.

Conditional Use No 2522 on behalf of Tharros Village – Code Purple at the Cape won narrow approval with a vote of 3 for the application, 1 against and 1 not voting.

There were six public hearings scheduled for the afternoon session, although Conditional Use No. 2546 on behalf of James Mershon was withdrawn from consideration by the applicant.

The Council did approve an ordinance authorizing the issuance of up to $239,059 of a General Obligation bond in connection with increased costs with the Joy Beach project.

The Council denied a Conditional Use No. 2636 for a mechanical trailer maintenance business and storage on Anderson Corner Road in Harbeson. Council said that the business is industrial – and not a fit for the very residential neighborhood.

The Council deferred a vote on Conditional Use No. 2602 on behalf of Sunset Bridge Corporation – for a non-profit public charity providing respite care north of Bethany Beach on Fred Hudson Road. Several people spoke both in favor and against this application.

The Council did approve the remaining Conditional Use applications – No. 2594 for an auto repair and vehicle storage business on Long Neck Road, No. 2541 for a mini-storage wit outdoor boat and RV storage in the Lincoln area.

The Sussex County Council is scheduled to meet next Tuesday, May 19, however no agenda has yet been posted.
