Cape Henlopen HS Student Appointed as 2026-27 Student Member to State Board of Education
Cape Henlopen High School’s Caleb Marcus has been appointed as the student member of the Delaware State Board of Education for the 2026-27 school year. Governor Matt Meyer announced the appointment Friday. This is a non-voting position which provides the student perspective on issues affecting Delaware’s’ public education system and helps to inform Board discussions on policy, regulations and the future of education in Delaware.

“Caleb has consistently demonstrated a remarkable commitment to ensuring students have a meaningful voice in the decisions that shape their education,” said Governor Matt Meyer. “From advocating for student representation at the local level to contributing to statewide education initiatives, he has shown leadership, initiative, and a genuine drive to improve opportunities for his classmates. I am excited to appoint him to the State Board of Education and look forward to the perspective he will bring to the Board’s work. Every day, our students aren’t preparing for the distant future, they’re shaping Delaware right now, in our classrooms and communities.”
Marcus, a rising senior at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes, was selected from a competitive pool of applicants from across Delaware. Throughout the selection process, he emphasized the importance of meaningful student engagement in educational decision-making and shared his vision for strengthening partnerships between students, educators, and policymakers.
The Governor’s appointment follows recommendations from the State Board of Education’s student member selection process, which seeks students who have demonstrated leadership, service, and a commitment to improving educational opportunities for their peers.
ABOUT CALEB MARCUS
Caleb Marcus is a student at Cape Henlopen High School and a resident of Sussex County. He has distinguished himself as a student leader dedicated to expanding student engagement in education policy and public service.
Marcus currently serves as Student Liaison to the Cape Henlopen School Board and founded the Student Advisory Council to the Superintendent for the Cape Henlopen School District, creating new opportunities for students to engage directly with district leadership. He also represented student perspectives on the Delaware Department of Education’s Hospitality, Events, and Tourism curriculum redesign committee, helping shape statewide career and technical education programs.
At Cape Henlopen High School, Marcus has served as Student Director of the ProStart program and as Chief Financial Officer and Lead Voting Delegate for Delaware DECA. Outside the classroom, he is an Eagle Scout and serves in leadership roles within Scouting America. His commitment to service also includes volunteer work with the Lewes Public Library and numerous youth leadership initiatives throughout Delaware.
Marcus believes students should play a meaningful role in shaping the policies and decisions that impact their educational experience and looks forward to representing Delaware students on the State Board of Education during the coming year.
