A Salisbury man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for assault and weapons offenses. Court records show 60 year old Arnold Miles was convicted in the Circuit Court for Wicomico County in February following a 2-day trial of 1st degree assault and weapons offenses. In January 2025 after a family conflict, Miles arranged to meet with his step-daughter’s boyfriend at the Salisbury City Park. At the park, Miles pulled a handgun and aimed at his unarmed victim – then fired. The boyfriend was able to escape and call for help.

Additional information from State’s Attorney Jamie Dykes:

On January 22, 2025, following a family conflict from the day prior, Miles exchanged text messages with his step-daughter and her boyfriend. The boyfriend and Miles arranged to meet at the Salisbury City Park later that evening to exchange words and air grievances. However, upon both parties’ arrival to the park, Miles brandished a handgun he was legally prohibited from possessing, and aimed it at his victim. The victim, who arrived without any weapons, held up his hands in surrender and demonstrated to Miles that he was unarmed.  As the victim began to retreat, Miles fired the gun in the victim’s direction. The victim heard the bullet fly past his ear, narrowly missing its target. The victim was able to escape and immediately contacted law enforcement, who swiftly responded to the scene.

Due to prior criminal convictions, Miles was prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition. Miles was also on probation for two separate narcotics convictions at the time of this offense.

Wicomico County State’s Attorney (SA) Jamie L. Dykes stated, “I am grateful to the jury for their thoughtful consideration of the facts in reaching a verdict, and to the Court for imposing a sentence that reflects the gravity of the Defendant’s actions. My office will continue to be diligent in holding accountable those who illegally possess and use firearms to conduct their violent acts. Gun violence, especially committed by those who are prohibited from possessing firearms, will never be tolerated in Wicomico County.”

SA Dykes commended the members of the Salisbury Police Department for their quick response and work in the investigation, specifically thanking the lead investigator, Detective Nathan Schrlau, for his efforts. Dykes also commended Assistant State’s Attorney Alexandra Stamnas, for her determined advocacy and prosecution in this case.
