AAA: Vehicle-Deer Collisions Peak in Fall, Average Claim Tops $5,600

AAA is warning drivers to be extra cautious this fall as deer activity spikes during mating season, raising the risk of crashes that can be dangerous and costly.  Nationwide, about 2.1 million deer-related crashes occur annually, causing $10 billion in losses, 59,000 injuries, and 440 deaths. From 2014–2023, more than 1,900 people were killed in animal-related crashes, including three in Delaware. Repair costs are also climbing. In 2024, the average animal-strike insurance claim in Delaware was $5,620, up 3% from 2023, largely due to expensive vehicle technology like cameras and sensors. AAA advises drivers to scan the road, use high beams when safe, expect multiple deer if one is spotted, avoid swerving, and always wear a seatbelt. Comprehensive insurance typically covers animal collisions, so motorists are encouraged to review their policies. Deer-vehicle collisions peak from October to December, especially at dawn and dusk, and often occur near wooded areas, open spaces, or water.
