David Hume IV Named Magistrate in Chancery

The Honorable David Hume, IV has joined the Delaware Chancery Court as Magistrate in Chancery. His offices will be in the Court of Chancery courthouse in Georgetown, but he will handle cases throughout the state. Magistrate Hume has worked for the Department of Justice since 1999 heading up the Felony Screening, Sex Crimes and Felony Trial Units in Sussex County. In 2016 he became Sussex County Chief Prosecutor and in 2023, Magistrate Hume joined the Department of Justice’s Appellate Unit, practicing before the Delaware Supreme Court, while serving as the Chief Legal Ethics Officer for the Delaware Department of Justice.

Magistrate Hume is a Delaware resident and graduate of Milford High School. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware and his law degree from the Delaware Law School (formerly Widener University School of Law). After law school, Magistrate Hume clerked for the Honorable Richard F.
Stokes, the Honorable Merrill C. Trader, and the Honorable Rosemary B. Beauregard of the Court of Common Pleas in Sussex and Kent Counties.

Magistrate Hume assisted in creating the Pre-Arrest Diversion Program, a program jointly managed by the Delaware Department of Justice, Delaware Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, and the Delaware State Police.  

Magistrate Hume has been active in the legal community, serving for 10 years as an associate member of the Delaware Board of Bar Examiners, and participating as a member of the Superior Court Criminal Rules Committee.
