State lawmakers may be out of session, but there will be House Education Committee Hearing on July 23 at 1pm to consider legislation that would expand the ability of Delaware school boards to increase school taxes without seeking approval by referendum vote. House Bill 129 would allow school boards to unilaterally increase taxes annually by either 2% or a rate equal to the change in a specific Consumer Price Index. This measure was not released from committee before the end of the session, however the bill’s sponsor, Representative Earl Jaques of Newark has said he would hold more hearings on the measure before lawmakers return to Dover in January.
