The Maryland Oversand Vehicle Area at the 21.8 KM mark had to be closed early this week to allow a dead whale to be safely dealt with at the site, according to the National Park Service. A 20-foot-long humpback whale was found washed up on the beach Monday morning.

So far, there are no obvious signs to the cause of death. NPS staff at Assateague Island National Seashore were planning to use heavy equipment to move the whale to the upper part of the beach. The carcass is expected to be ceremoniously buried once the necropsy is complete.
