Del. Bill Looks To Reduce Domestic Violence Involving Guns

Legislation that has the goal of reducing domestic violence incidents involving a firearm has passed in the Delaware State House of Representatives.

The measure would prohibit a person who is the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant or an active indictment related to felony or misdemeanor domestic violence from purchasing a firearm. The person would have to be aware that he or she is the subject of an arrest warrant or indictment.

“Separating from an abusive relationship is the most dangerous time for a victim of domestic violence. Studies show that over half of women killed by an intimate partner are killed with a firearm,” Representative Krista Griffith, D-Fairfax said. “This bill will close a loophole in the system to protect victims of domestic violence and stop further acts of violence from being committed by a firearm.”

According to statistics provided by the House Democratic Caucus, 29 of 41 domestic violence-related fatalities – more than 70% – in Delaware involved firearms.

House Bill 124 goes to the State Senate for consideration.
