Delaware State Police Memorial Day Message

With Memorial Day just around the corner, many of us gather with loved ones to honor our fallen heroes and current military members. The Delaware State Police is here to remind everyone of the importance of driving safely, particularly during this weekend, but also each and every day.

Memorial Day often marks the “unofficial” beginning of summer, which means traffic is expected to increase, making it all the more crucial for us to take responsibility for our safety and the safety of others. The Delaware State Police will be actively enforcing traffic laws and providing assistance to drivers in need. Our troopers aim to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injury crashes during this unofficial start of summer by focusing on distracted driving, unrestrained motorists, impaired drivers, and aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding and tailgating. We urge you to do your part by being responsible drivers.

To ensure safe travels during the holiday weekend, follow these simple steps:

  • Tame your inner speed demon
  • Buckle up and ensure everyone in the vehicle is also buckled up
  • Never get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Designate a sober driver, call a sober friend, call a sober family member, or use a ride-share service
  • If you spot a drunk or aggressive driver on the road, contact 911 immediately
  • If someone you know is about to drive while impaired, take their keys and help them find a safe way home
  • Eliminate driving distractions such as texting
  • Be aware of increased pedestrian and bicycle traffic by yielding to pedestrians and sharing the road responsibly

REMEMBER, one poor decision can have life-altering consequences, so drive safely, be responsible, and have a memorable and meaningful Memorial Day.
