The Scripps National Spelling Bee got underway in Washington, DC this morning with 231 spellers taking part including three from Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Delaware’s super spellers were both eliminated in the first round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Wednesday. Zion Miller represented the Seaford District Library. Declan Durand represented the Sussex County Public Libraries. They both finished in a tie for 173rd place.

Evangelene Hill, the only contestant from the Eastern Shore of Maryland and representing UMES, made it to the semi-finals but was eliminated in the 6th round where she finished in a tie for 22nd place. There were six other contestants from Maryland – all have now been eliminated – with Hill the only one advancing to the semi-finals.

The finals are Thursday night.
