Dover Man Arrested for Identity Theft

A Dover man has been arrested in an identity theft investigation that began in October – in Hartly. Delaware State Police began investigating thefts from a mailbox at a Halltown Road residence in Hartly. Police learned the victims placed outgoing mail in the mailbox including two checks. A suspicious vehicle was seen at the mailbox soon after – and when it left – the mail was gone. The victims notified their bank which place a stop payment on the stolen checks.

On October 21st one of the checks was presented at the Milford branch of Shore United Bank by a male subject identified as 48 year old Adrian Spence, Jr. of Dover. The payee section of the check had been altered to show Spence’s name, but the bank identified the fraud, declined the transaction and notified the victims.

Detectives confirmed Spence as the suspect and he was arrested on December 4th by Dover Police who were contacting Spence on an unrelated matter. Spencer is charged with identity theft, theft $1500 or greater and 2nd degree forgery. He was released on a $3500 unsecured bond.
