Fenwick Island is trying something new in an effort to keep pedestrians safe – and more visible – crosswalk flags. At crosswalks where there is no traffic signal – pedestrians will find a bin with red traffic flags.

Pedestrians should us a red flag to gain further attention from drivers before entering the crosswalk, wave the flag until you get the driver’s attention and they stop. After crossing, deposit the flag in the bin on the opposite side of the street.

Mayor Natalie Magdeburger says the red flags have been used with some success in Florida.

Mayor Magdeburger adds the Fenwick Island Police Department is and will continue to actively engage in actions to enforce our pedestrian safety laws including ticketing those who try to speed through our Town, vehicles making illegal U-turns as well as drivers who do not respect our pedestrians’ right of way in the crosswalks.

And the sidewalk project that is slated to occur in the 2028 time period should, if it stands as currently engineered, have flashing lights at all crosswalks not controlled by traffic lights.
