Here Comes Summer – Memorial Day Weekend – the 1st Big Summer Travel Weekend

Memorial Day weekend is here – and that means a LOT of people will be on the roads traveling to visit friends and family – or headed to our beaches and State Parks.  AAA Mid-Atlantic says that more than 115,000 Delawareans will travel 50 miles or more over the holiday weekend – and most of them will do it by car – and will pay much more for their gas to do it!

Gas prices are still moving upwards – with the national average at $2.96.  Delaware and Maryland at $2.95 and $2.97.  And many drivers say hitting the $3 mark will make them think more about their driving habits – well New Jersey and Pennsylvania are now over $3 per gallon for regular gas.

In spite of the high cost for gas, Memorial Day weekend traffic will see an increase for the 4th year in a row – with travel volumes at the highest level since 2005.  Today and Friday will be the heaviest travel days – and your best options, if possible, are to travel during non-peak times – early in the morning or after rush hour is over.

AAA offers some ways you can conserve your precious fuel – travel during those non-peak hours so you’re not sitting in traffic going nowhere.  Combine your outtings – to stores, appointments, etc and if possible park in a central location – and walk to your destinations.  Drive the speed limit!  Every 5 miles over the speed limit you drive is costing you more money.  Don’t use your trunk for storage – the more weight – the more gas is consumed.
