Legislation Introduced to Streamline Food Licensing, Boost Maryland鈥檚 Ag Economy

Maryland farms could soon be allowed to expand on-farm food service operations under new legislation designed to create economic opportunities and add value for local communities. The proposal, introduced by the Maryland Department of Health in coordination with the Departments of Agriculture and the Environment, would streamline food licensing by creating a new, renewable one-year license, replacing short-term licenses that require repeated applications. The bill builds on Governor Moore鈥檚 2025 executive order supporting the state鈥檚 agricultural economy and establishes a clear framework for farms of any size to add or expand food service while maintaining public health standards. If adopted, the legislation would take effect in January 2027, allowing time for regulations to be developed with stakeholder and public input.
